Welcome to the Fifth Grade Instrumental/Choral Program!
Dear Fifth Grade Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the Hingham Instrumental/Choral Program! We are very excited to welcome your children to our respective groups next year, and we are looking forward to getting started. In fifth grade, all students are required to participate in one of the following three music ensemble choices: band, strings, or chorus. All three programs meet during the school day, twice per cycle for forty minutes. No prior musical experience is expected for participation in any of the groups, and we offer a limited number of instruments to families who need financial assistance. Please contact your school’s administration for more information about financial assistance. As a reminder this same letter went home last June, so if you have already registered your child for music, then you do not need to read on and you do not need to register again. However, if you missed registration last June and/or are new to the district, then please read the following information to get your child set-up for grade five music.
If your child decides to participate in either the band or the strings program, you will need to have an instrument ready for your child to use in class by September 25th. Most parents choose to participate in a “rent-to-own” program with a local music company at a monthly cost of about $25-35 dollars. This is an option that we highly recommend. While you are welcome to rent from any company of your choice, two companies travel to our schools weekly to repair instruments and drop off supplies, so you may find them to be convenient options. Those companies are Acoustic Strings of New England (ASNE) for string students, and David French Music for band students. If you are interested in renting an instrument from either company, you must call or order online before Wednesday, September 20 if you would like the instrument to be dropped off at the school before the first day of classes. Company contact information and rental instructions are included on the next page. If you already own an instrument, but it has not been played in awhile, we highly recommend that you have your child’s music teacher or an instrument repair shop take a look at it before your child begins playing in class. It can be very hard to tell if an instrument is working just by looking at it, and we would hate for your child to start out at a disadvantage due to a broken instrument.
We also strongly recommend against purchasing instruments from places like Ebay, Walmart, Target, etc. While the lowest prices can be tempting, many of the least expensive brands of instruments are made with low quality materials that break easily and are difficult to repair. These instruments also tend to produce a low quality sound (like a toy), which can put a beginner at a disadvantage and can end up costing you more money in the long run due to frequent repair needs. If you plan to buy your child an instrument, we highly recommend that you contact your child’s teacher for information about appropriate brands and models before making your purchase.
Lastly, to sign your child up for band, strings, or chorus, please register your child online by Friday, September 22. Every child must register for an ensemble using the "registration" tab above. Please note that all instruments ordered through Acoustic Strings New England and David French Music will be delivered directly to your child’s school in September before the start date of their first music class.
We are excited to welcome you to the fifth grade instrumental and choral programs and look forward to a great year with your children!
